DIY holiday mason jar cookies for your loved one

Jeff and I have been brainstorming different DIY gifts we want to share with loved ones. So far we have tested a few cookie recipes (which we will share in future posts) and now we are testing the Christmas cookie in a jar by Sally’s Baking Addition. Once we made the first mason jar cookie mix (while dropping flour all over the place), it not only looked amazing but we were also excited to have our friends test out their baking skills.

Collecting and assembling our jars

After reviewing Sally’s blog, we went out to Target and found the following items:

• 12 mason jars for $7.99 (each were 16 ounces)
• Joy holiday tags for $1.00 (these were placed on top of the mason jar and held the remaining steps of the recipe)

Since Sally’s recipe used 32 ounce mason jars, we had to make the following modifications for our 16 ounce jars:

• 1 cup of flour
• 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon of salt
• 3/8 cup of packed light brown sugar
• 1/8 cup of granulated sugar
• 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
• 1/4 cup of M&Ms

With one 16 once mason jar, there will be a total of 12 delicious cookies! If you do decide to buy the 32 ounce jars, we recommend following the recipe measurements on her site.

For each jar we decided to divide and conquer the different ingredients in order to get the masons jars done quicker. Plus we realized that assembling the jar together was more enjoyable. Here is how were divided the mason jar cookie mix:

Cindy

• Mixed the flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Then with the help of a funnel, placed this mixture first in the mason jar.

Jeff

• The next layers placed in the mason jar were 1) brown sugar, 2) white sugar, 3) semi-sweet chocolate chips, and 4) the M&Ms on the top layer

It did not take us long to assemble these cute gifts and if you decide to make them too, we definitely recommend having a cookie assembling partner in crime. It can either be a friend, a significant other, your child, or anyone one else who you can share this fun memory with!

Writing the remaining directions 

With the adorable joy gift tags, we used the top of the mason jar cover to trace and cut out the exact measurement. Then they were securely placed them on top. Behind the joy tags, we added the remaining ingredients and directions needed to finish the cookie recipe. This tag adds both cute personality to the top of the mason jars and also secures the remaining ingredient list/directions.

The Final DIY Product

Once we finished assembling all of the cookie jars, we literally gave eachother high fives and then realized we really wanted cookies (side note: we ended up making yummy molasses cookies, if you are interested in the recipe, click here). Overall it was a fun experience and we are excited knowing that these gifts were made with plenty of love. We highly recommend making these DIY cookie jar recipe and the great thing is you can add any types of toppings on the inside and even decorate the mason jar in whatever style you choose!
